Eclipse Glasses and Photography: Prepare for Luxor 2027

Prepare your observing equipment before leaving for Egypt. Follow current NASA solar-viewing guidance and your equipment manufacturer’s instructions; a photograph is never worth unsafe viewing.

Solar viewers are different from sunglasses

Use undamaged, reputable solar viewers that comply with ISO 12312-2 for direct viewing during the partial phases. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide suitable protection. Inspect the viewers, follow their instructions and supervise children. If you cannot establish that equipment is suitable, use an indirect viewing method described by NASA instead.

Cameras and optical equipment need their own filters

Eclipse glasses do not make it safe to look through an unfiltered camera, telescope or binoculars. Those instruments need appropriate solar filters fitted securely at the front, following specialist instructions. Do not improvise a filter from household materials. Seek competent advice before using magnifying optics.

Understand the totality exception

NASA permits unaided viewing only while the Sun is completely covered during the brief total phase, at a location inside the path. Protection must return before any bright portion reappears. If you are uncertain about the phase or your location, keep the solar viewer on. A partial eclipse never offers this exception.

Rehearse a simple photography plan

Practise with your safely filtered equipment before travel. Pack charged batteries, spare storage, a stable support and a way to keep equipment out of walkways. Decide which tasks matter most so you are not troubleshooting during the event. Ask whether your viewing venue permits tripods and whether equipment storage or transport needs special arrangements.
